In UKS2, we have been learning about the role of both a priest and a deacon following on from our learning about Baptism (and the fact that both can minister the Sacrament). Priests take on leadership roles as Christ, whereas Deacons are called to serve and assist. The children have learned the Greek word – Diakonos – meaning to serve, and have found out that both are ordained, but only priests are ordained through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. We designed stoles for both priests and deacons with key words and symbols used as clues to show which is which and looked at a ‘day in the life’ of a priest and deacon and even Pope Francis.
