Our Forest School Adventure: Becoming Eco Warriors Together!

Today was a day of adventure, collaboration, and learning as our school joined forces with other local schools for an unforgettable Forest School trip! The theme for the day was clear: Becoming Eco Warriors and learning how we can all do our part to make our schools more eco-friendly. The beautiful forest setting provided the perfect backdrop for discovering the wonders of nature and how to care for God’s creation.

The day began with an inspiring discussion about what it means to be an Eco Warrior. Children shared their thoughts on how they could help their schools become greener, focusing on two key areas: water conservation and recycling. Ideas included using rainwater to water school plants, turning off taps when not in use, and setting up recycling stations for paper, plastics, and even food waste. It was heartwarming to see their passion for making a difference!

Next, the students put their creativity into action by crafting bird feeders from recycled materials. Milk cartons and leftover string were transformed into colourful feeders to hang in the trees. It was a wonderful reminder that items we might throw away can be given a new purpose. These bird feeders will not only help sustain wildlife during the colder months but also serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of reusing and recycling.

During their time in the forest, the children also explored ways to use natural resources responsibly. They learned about the importance of trees for oxygen and the water cycle and reflected on how reducing waste and replanting trees can help protect forests like the one we visited.

We are so proud of the Eco Warriors who represented our school today. Their enthusiasm and ideas will surely inspire the rest of our school community to make meaningful changes. Let us continue to work together to conserve water, recycle responsibly, and be good stewards of the beautiful world around us.

As we return to school, we’re excited to implement some of the wonderful ideas shared during the trip and encourage others to do the same. After all, as Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si’, we are called to care for our common home.

Here’s to many more eco-friendly adventures ahead! 🌳✨

Curriculum Intent

At St Vincent’s it is our INTENT is to enable ALL children to thrive through the opportunities we provide them with, in order to:

Curriculum Context

St Vincent’s is a 1.5 form entry school with 285 children ranging from 4 -11. Children come predominantly from the parishes of Sacred Heart in Mill Hill and St Anthony’s in Edgware.

Children come from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds, speak 17 different languages and hail from 26 different ethnic groups. The curriculum we present, and promote, to the children is an endeavour to reflect these differences by providing opportunities to explore the different countries, languages and customs our children are part of through the projects they investigate. We have looked closely at the context of our school, the backgrounds of the children and how life is for a child growing up in North London today. We have used the underlying principles of our Catholic Faith and the example of our namesake St Vincent to create a set of values which lie at the heart of our curriculum.

We are aware of the changing nature of society and the pressures faced by young children as they enter the next stage of their education. The rise in Mental Health related issues has been widely documented across the media. Therefore, issues such as internet safety and the enormous impact across society of social media are at the forefront of our minds when planning our curriculum. With the current worldwide concerns relating to Covid 19, racial justice, equality and diversity, as well as gender and economic background, we feel it is our duty to prepare the children through a concerted focus on building independence, resilience and communication skills linked to our Vincentian Values.
