“Caritas Christi Urget Nos –

The love of Christ urges us to care for each other and strive for excellence in everything we do.”

LKS2 End of summer Project

Written by children from Rowan Class.

Based on our project ‘How can we teach others to stay fit and healthy?’, we learnt what a healthy balanced meal is and how to stay fit. We also focused on our Vincentian Value, ‘We Build Relationships Based on Trust’ which was shown through adults teaching us the right knowledge, looking at the Romans and the support from each other.

We understood that our teeth are part of our digestive system and we need them to eat food (healthy food and sometimes the odd sweet/chocolate as long as it is in moderation). We also learnt what animals needed and looked at food chains. Mrs Young (a hygienist) came in and showed us how to save our teeth from bacteria and getting gum disease. She also showed us how to brush our teeth.

After we learnt about our digestive system, we also learnt the importance of going to the toilet and when we should speak to our parents by the colour of our faeces. As we considered the food that we were eating, we had to find out what made a healthy, balanced meal so we began by learning about the food groups, the importance of exercise and whether it was always this way for us. This brought us to the Romans where we found out that they gave us a lot of the good food we eat today such as meat and vegetables. They also helped us become a healthier society by creating sewage systems and roads. We also looked at how they were entertained and their exercise routines which was closely linked to fighters/gladiators. Fighters had to train and be healthy to become strong (they liked when gladiators had to fight until their death.)

We started to create our own workout routine for a warm up with Coach Nick to prepare us for sports day with inspiration from the Romans. We also decided to make our own music to our own national anthem where we used the school motto, “Caritas Christi Urget Nos – The Love of Christ Urges Us On To Care for Each Other and Strive for Excellence in Everything We Do” and we performed this before our sports day began.

We decided we needed to understand how to make our own healthy, balanced meal so we went to Waitrose in Mill Hill with a budget of £5. We walked down there (as this helps us stay fit and helps our mental health), bought our meal and created it when we got back to school.

This brought us on to PSHE where we also learnt what else is good for our bodies, what keeps us safe and how to help others. We learnt about the risks and dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We learnt what is illegal and how some drugs can help us such as medicines prescribed by the doctor. We also learnt about first aid and how to call 999 if we were in danger (or 111 when it is not an immediate emergency). We also learnt how we can contact ChildLine on 0800 1111 if we could not talk to a close and trusted adult around us.

To end our project, we used the book ‘The Couch Potato’ to write our very own story for Key Stage One on how to stay fit and healthy. We went and read it to them which they seemed to enjoy.

Amelie said, “I liked the project because before, I never knew what was healthy and what the food groups were but now I do.”

Annabella informed us that, ‘I learned how to keep my body fit and healthy and what is good for my bones.’

“My favourite part was creating our own music,” Alfred told us.

“My favourite part was checking my teeth,” said Chizara.

“I liked the trip to Waitrose but I didn’t like the walking there,” said most of the class.

“I think the project could have been improved if we did more work on the digestive system,” Adaeze enthusiastically said.

Zoe said, “I like how we get to sit together in PSHE and share our ideas. Sometimes you don’t need to write anything.”

Curriculum Intent

At St Vincent’s it is our INTENT is to enable ALL children to thrive through the opportunities we provide them with, in order to:

Curriculum Context

St Vincent’s is a 1.5 form entry school with 285 children ranging from 4 -11. Children come predominantly from the parishes of Sacred Heart in Mill Hill and St Anthony’s in Edgware.

Children come from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds, speak 17 different languages and hail from 26 different ethnic groups. The curriculum we present, and promote, to the children is an endeavour to reflect these differences by providing opportunities to explore the different countries, languages and customs our children are part of through the projects they investigate. We have looked closely at the context of our school, the backgrounds of the children and how life is for a child growing up in North London today. We have used the underlying principles of our Catholic Faith and the example of our namesake St Vincent to create a set of values which lie at the heart of our curriculum.

We are aware of the changing nature of society and the pressures faced by young children as they enter the next stage of their education. The rise in Mental Health related issues has been widely documented across the media. Therefore, issues such as internet safety and the enormous impact across society of social media are at the forefront of our minds when planning our curriculum. With the current worldwide concerns relating to Covid 19, racial justice, equality and diversity, as well as gender and economic background, we feel it is our duty to prepare the children through a concerted focus on building independence, resilience and communication skills linked to our Vincentian Values.
