Global Scholars is a programme children in year 5 and 6 complete (we have been doing this for the last 7 years!). They communicate directly in e-classrooms with peers across the globe such as India, America, Kazakhstan, Spain, China and Poland. They communicate online and it ‘creates opportunities for students to build important global and general learning competencies. The posts and projects of international peers are primary texts for them to learn about other cities, the common global topic they are studying, and the skills needed to solve a global problem.’
This year, the focus is on water. ‘Water is an essential part of our everyday lives. We use water to grow food and make products, such as clothing and electronics. Water provides ways to transport people and products around the world. Water is also important for cultural activities. Being near water can even improve people’s mood.’
‘Everyone needs access to safe water for drinking, bathing, and preparing food. If safe water is hard to access or unavailable, people may develop health problems or may have to travel far to collect water. With a limited amount of water on Earth, it’s important to conserve it so that everyone has enough in the future. Communities can work together to improve water access for all by using water responsibly.’
‘The children will be exploring: How they use water every day? How is water part of their cultures? They will research a water activity or celebration that is important in their cultures. They will analyze their water footprint to understand water use in their daily life. The children will also conduct field research to complete an audit of water sources available at St Vincent’s school. They will learn how school communities can improve access to safe water and promote responsible water use.’
