Lower Key Stage 2 started their projects last week: “What do we need to help us grow?”
The children began by reading the first chapter of James and the Giant Peach where they explored the main characters James, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge.
“James lived a happy life by the seaside until a terrible thing happened and he had to go and live with his horrible aunts where his rights were not being respected,” Laila told us. We then carried out our entry event where our teachers took us to the adventure playground. Adaeze informed us that, “When we went to the adventure playground, some of us were able to play and some of us were not which made us feel sad and that our rights were not being respected.”
The children were able to empathise with how the character in the book was feeling but also how children feel around the world whose rights are not being respected. The children learnt more about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and what responsibilities come with these rights.
